Hissatsu No Ken Dojo

Chikubu Kai Karate Do

Hissatsu No Ken

Q:  What does Hissatsu No Ken mean, and why is the Dojo called that?

A:  Years ago, Kobayashi Goichi Shihan gave Shihan McCoy a scroll with the words "Hissatsu No Ken" written thereon.  He explained that it meant "strong fist" or "strong punch", a testament to Shihan's punching ability.

Shihan McCoy will usually protest that "I don't hit hard..", yet he has to keep his fist only loosely closed when he punches!

The Japanese word, "Ken", can also mean blade, so Hissatsu No Ken could also be read "strong blade" or "strong sword", which would be fitting considering Shihan's fondness for the Japanese Sword Arts.

Shihan McCoy chose this name for his Dojo not to focus the spotlight on himself, but to pay homage to his own instructors.  Shihan feels strongly that if his technique is becoming something of note, that he owes it all to those responsible for helping him find it.  Also, Shihan felt quite honored to be given this name by one of the senior Shihans in the Kai, and feels it only appropriate to use it.
